Tabs and Windows

Look and theme

Light or dark, a color and grain around the page, the bars, the app icon, and how large pages are.

⇧⌘L⌃⌘B

Theme#

Settings › Appearance › Theme is Light, Dark or the Mac’s own. The window and the pages follow.

The window around the page#

The Settings › Appearance › Window menu shows each way the page can sit in the window, in small:

  • Edge to edge: the page fills the window, and the tabs wear its color.
  • A color: the window is painted and the page lies on it as a card.
  • The site’s color: the window takes the color of the site’s own bar, as if the bar ran up into it.

Color and grain

With a color, the dot on the Look row of Settings › Appearance opens the editor: drag the ringed dot across a field of dots for the hue and how much of it, then set transparency and grain on the two tracks below. Hold ⌥ to drag slowly, and double-click a track to reset it. A dark window wears each color a shade deeper. Coming from Arc or Chrome, Match Arc under the tracks takes its colors. With two spaces or more, each has a color of its own, set on its page in Settings › Spaces.

Glass

On macOS 26 the transparency track ends in a bead of glass. Drag past the end, or click the bead, and the window’s frame turns to Liquid Glass, your color a tint on it and the sidebar’s words kept readable. Drag back onto the wave for your color again. Each space keeps its own, so one can be glass and the next a color. With Reduce Transparency or Increase Contrast on, the window wears the color whole.

App icon#

Settings › Appearance › App icon picks the icon in the Dock: Default, Flat, Watercolor Glass, Opal, Smoked Chrome, Amber or Red Enamel.

Tabs#

Settings › Appearance › Tabs puts them across the Top or in a Sidebar, as ⇧⌘S does, and Tab icons chooses between each site’s icon and a letter.

Address bar#

Yab shows no address bar by default: ⌘L is the address. If you’d rather see where you are, press ⇧⌘L, or choose Site or Full URL in Settings › Appearance › Address bar. The site is written across the top of the page; click it to change the address. Point at it for a lock, which opens what you allowed the site, its certificate and translation, and a button that copies the link.

Bookmarks bar#

⌃⌘B shows your bookmarks in a row above the page, as the Settings › Appearance › Bookmarks bar switch does. Folders open as menus; ⌘-click opens a bookmark in a new tab.

Page size and fonts#

Settings › Appearance › Page size sets how large sites are drawn when they have no zoom of their own: three Aa, 90%, 100% and 125%. ⌘+ and ⌘- still give a site a zoom of its own, and ⌘0 brings it back to this size.

Customize… on the Fonts row opens the type pages are set in when they don’t choose their own: the text size, the standard, serif, sans-serif and fixed-width fonts, and the smallest size any text may be. Restore Defaults puts them all back.
