Tabs and Windows

Working with tabs

Open, close, bring back, switch, move, rename and pick several tabs at once.

⌘T⌃⇥

Open and close#

⌘T opens the field over the page; a tab is only made once you go somewhere, so esc leaves your row as it was. You can also drop a link or some text on the tab row or the sidebar to open it.

⌘W closes a tab, as does a middle-click or its cross. Closing the last tab leaves the empty window with the field: go somewhere from there, ⇧⌘T brings the tab back, and ⌘W again closes the window. A tab on a call asks first: press ⌘W again to leave the call.

⇧⌘T brings back what you closed, where it stood. Tabs closed together come back together, and the last tidy-up comes back the same way. History › Recently Closed lists the last ten.

Switch#

  • ⌘1 to ⌘8 go to the first eight tabs, pins first; ⌘9 goes to the last.
  • ⇧⌘] and ⇧⌘[ go to the next and previous tab, round and round.
  • Hold ⌘ a moment and each pin shows its number.
  • Rest the pointer on a tab and a card shows a picture of the page, its title and its site.
  • ⌘T finds any open tab by its name or site: type a few letters and press ↩.

Recent tabs on ⌃Tab

A quick ⌃⇥ goes back to the tab you were on before. Hold ⌃ and a grid of your recent tabs appears: press ⇥ again to step further back, ⌃⇧⇥ to step forward, and let go to land. esc stays where you are, and ⌃W closes the tile you are on. It walks today’s tabs only: pins and kept tabs have their own places, and ⌘1 to ⌘9 reach them.

Move#

Drag a tab to put it somewhere else: into the pins to pin it, across the line to keep it, down over the page to split the view with it, or onto the space at the sidebar’s foot to send it to another space. ⌥⇧⌘← and ⌥⇧⌘→ move it one place at a time.

Pick several#

⇧-click picks a run of tabs and ⌘-click adds or takes away one; ⇧⌘A picks them all. Then close, duplicate, pin, copy their addresses, bookmark them into a new folder, send them to a space or drag them, all at once. esc lets go.

Rename#

Double-click the tab you are on, or press ⌃⌘R, and its title becomes a field. Leave it empty to get the page’s own title back. On a pin, the same key changes its letter.

Duplicate, mute, close the others#

  • Duplicate, in the tab’s right-click menu, opens the same page beside it. It has no key unless you give it one in Settings › Shortcuts.
  • A tab playing sound shows a speaker: click it, or press ⇧⌘M, to mute the tab, and again to hear it. A muted tab keeps its speaker, crossed out, on every page it goes to.
  • ⌥⌘W closes the other tabs. Pinned and kept ones are only put to sleep, and a call is never closed.

When you open Yab again#

Every window comes back with its tabs, pins, folders, splits and the names you gave them. They come back asleep and load when you click them, so twenty tabs cost nothing at launch. Private tabs never come back.
