Peek

Shift-click a link and it opens over the page you’re on. Close it, and you’re right where you were.

⇧-clickForce Click

⇧-click a link, or Force Click it on a trackpad, and its page opens in a panel over the one you are reading. The page behind dims and stays exactly as it was.

Put the peek away (or click the dimmed page)escor⌘W
Keep it as a tab⌘O
Open it beside the page, in Split View⇧⌘O

Hold ⇧ on a link for half a second, without clicking, and a tip under the pointer says the page’s title and, in a sentence or two, what it is, put together on this Mac. Let go and it goes. Turn it off in Settings › Tabs.

A peek belongs to its tab: switch away and it hides, come back and it is there. Links to meetings always open as tabs. Turn peeking off in Settings › Tabs › Peek at a link with ⇧-click or Force Click.
