Tabs and Windows

Spaces

Sets of tabs in one window, each with its own pins, color and, if you like, sign-ins.

⌃1 … ⌃9

A space is a row of tabs of its own: work, home, a trip. Each has its name, an emoji, its color and grain, and either the sign-ins you share with the rest or sign-ins of its own, for a second account on the same sites.

Turn them on#

Spaces are off until you want them. Open Settings › Spaces and press Turn On Spaces; the tabs you have become the first space, Personal. Turned off again, you return to it and the others wait, tabs and all.

Make a space#

  1. Click the space at the foot of the sidebar (or beside the window’s buttons, with tabs on top) and choose New Space.
  2. Start it empty, or with the tab you are on. Name it: the emoji and color follow the name until you choose your own.
  3. Pick its color, then whether it shares sign-ins or has its own, and press Create Space.

A space with its own sign-ins starts signed out of every site and keeps its cookies apart from the rest. Deleting one closes its tabs (⇧⌘T brings them back) and erases its sign-ins from this Mac.

Move between them#

  • ⌃1 to ⌃9 go to a space by its place; drag spaces in the list to change it.
  • ⌃⌘→ and ⌃⌘← go to the next and previous one.
  • Swipe sideways with two fingers over the sidebar and the next space follows your fingers.

The tabs you leave stay as they are and music keeps playing. A call, and an agent at work, come with you.

Fold a space#

With two spaces or more, the space’s name heads its tabs in the sidebar. Click it to fold the space’s kept tabs and folders away under it, as in Arc, and click again to bring them back. Today’s tabs stay where they are, and a kept tab you are on stays in sight under the name. Hover the name for •••: rename the space, change its emoji or look, make a folder, or open its settings. A right-click opens the same menu, and a double-click renames the space.

Send a tab to another space#

Press ⌃⇧1 to ⌃⇧9, choose Move to Space from its right-click menu, or drag it onto the space at the sidebar’s foot and drop it on the one you want. Between spaces with different sign-ins the page opens fresh, signed in as that space.

A site that always opens in one space#

With two spaces or more, Settings › Spaces › Links from other apps sends a site, when you click it in Mail, Slack or any other app, to the space it belongs in, as Arc’s Air Traffic Control does. Press Add Site…, or choose Always Open in … from a small window. Yab also suggests one when you keep moving a site to the same space.
