Reading and triage

Go through your mail on keys, a thread at a time or many at once, and take back any of it.

⌘K⌘Z

Mail is made to be gone through on keys, one thread after another. What a key does to a row in the list, it does to the letter you’re reading, and most do it to every row you picked. ⌘K lists what you can do with each key beside it, and ? lists every key: type what you want, or the key, and ↩ does it.

Read#

↩ or O opens a thread where the list was, and esc takes it back into its row. J and K go from thread to thread without the list, and ⌘[ and ⌘] walk back and forth through what you’ve seen.

In a long thread, earlier mails fold to a line each until you click one, and what a mail quotes waits behind •••. ↑ and ↓ go from mail to mail, and R answers the one you’re on. A link opens in a peek over the thread; with ⌘ it opens in a tab of its own.

Files in a thread#

A clip at a row’s end says the thread carries files. In the thread, each file is a chip under its mail, with its name and size. Double-click one to open it, drag it to the Finder to put it there, or click it to choose it:

Look at it with Quick LookSpace
Open it in its app↩
Save it to Downloads⌘S

The mail’s first file, or its first link⌘O

The last month’s files are fetched ahead, so most open at once.

E takes a thread out of the inbox, as Gmail’s archive does; when someone writes in it again, it comes back. In Waiting, it means you’re done waiting on it. H puts it off until a time: see Reminders and send later. A muted thread stays out of the inbox whatever comes in it. Each says in the corner what it did, with ⌘Z.

Several at once#

X picks the row you’re on, and ⇧J and ⇧K pick on down or up from it; ⌘A picks it and every row under it, and ⇧⌘A the whole list. ⌘-click and ⇧-click do the same with the pointer. Picked rows wear a tick, and the list’s head says how many.

Then E, H, S, #, !, ⇧M, U, L, V and ⌘U act on all of them at once, said in one notice and taken back with one ⌘Z. esc lets them go.

Narrow the list#

⇧U shows only unread threads, ⇧S only starred ones and ⇧R only those you haven’t written in. Press it again, or esc, for the whole list. A thread you read while only unread ones show stays until the list shows all again, so J and K keep their place.

Go to another list#

⇥ and ⇧⇥ go down and up the column’s lists, in its order. G and a key go anywhere else:

Each list shows what’s on this Mac at once, then asks Gmail for anything older; Show Older Mail from Gmail at its foot brings more.

Take it back#

⌘Z, or Z, takes back the last thing you did to your mail, and pressed again, the one before: a thread done, put off, starred, labeled or muted, a whole pick at once, a reminder, a mail sent while it still waits. The mail goes back the way it left, and if Gmail has already heard, Yab takes it back there too. While you’re writing, ⌘Z undoes your typing.
