A split takes part of your inbox into a list of its own in the column: mail from certain people, a kind of mail, or a search you keep. It’s all sorted on this Mac, as mail comes.
The built-in splits#
Each is off until you turn it on in Settings › Mail, under Splits:
- VIP: the people you add, with Add to VIP in ⌘K on a mail of theirs.
- Team: people at your own company’s domain.
- Calendar: invitations.
- Receipts: bills and receipts.
- Dev: GitHub, GitLab, Linear, Vercel, Sentry and their kin.
Each split’s row there also says where its mail goes: Only here, out of Needs you and Other; Also in Needs you, in both; or Skips the inbox, below. And whether it notifies: VIP and Team do, the rest are quiet until you say.
Your own#
Click New Split at the end of the column’s lists and say what it keeps, such as newsletters I actually read: Make It with Claude turns that into rules from the people who write to you. Or add people and senders yourself, and press Keep Split. A split’s rules stand under its name, and a cross takes one off. A search becomes a split with Keep as a Split.
Order#
Drag lists and splits in the column into the order you like; ⇥ and ⇧⇥ follow it. Each says what’s new in it in words, “2 new”. A split with nothing in it stays out of the column, unless you turn off Settings › Mail › Hide empty splits.
Skip the inbox#
A split that Skips the inbox archives its new mail as it comes, so it never reaches Needs you or a notification. Mail from people you’ve written to, from your own domain, or in a thread you wrote in or starred still comes in. Your new tab says what went, “12 newsletters archived today”, and opens Archived Today, where ⌘Z brings them back, newest first.
Labels#
Your Gmail labels are in the column under the lists, nested as Gmail nests them, each with how many of its threads are unread. Click one to open its list.
L and V list your labels: type to narrow them, and ↩ puts one on, or takes it off when it’s ticked. Words no label has offer Create “…”, made in Gmail too. In Starred, Y unstars, and in Spam and Trash it brings the thread back to the inbox. All of them work on every row you picked, with ⌘Z.
Gmail’s other lists#
G then S opens Starred, G then T Sent and G then A All Mail; Reading and triage has the rest, and Go To in ⌘K lists them all. Each shows what’s on this Mac at once, then asks Gmail for anything older.
